I had a conversation with a family member yesterday, the same conversation over and over again, concerning his justifications for killing people with guns in self-defense.
At first I had trouble arguing against it…so I just stopped.
Eventually I realized specific errors in the “rationality” of this justification.
The defense of this self-defensiveness seems filled with errors and fearful feelings that create arguments for self-preservation and murderous self-defense to protect self:
First, I sense there is huge error in my society concerning guns and killing humans accepted as normal and even a good thing to do in war and punishment.
Violence toward people who commit violence…why would anyone expect good to come out of violence? I guess that depends on your definition of “good”…what is beneficial and loving, not harmful.
and “good” for whom? for all/any humans (that would be expressing the equality principle, viewing everyone’s worth/value and deserving of good as equal.
Why does the world spend trillions on guns and weapons of mass destruction, rather than invest in creating tools that stop a human from approaching with violence intention into your home (like tasers for example) that don’t harm or create pain? Create tools and methods that temporarily restrict or limit a human’s violent behaviors, versus permanently harming or killing them for their violent intentions or actions.
Instead of a human history of creating many weapons for war and human destruction, why don’t we have a history of humans inventing tools to pause aggressive attacks without permanent pain or maim and end to their life on earth?
